Orléans, France, was the site of the first GlobalSoilMap Conference held October 7–9, with approximately 100 attendees. Sponsored by the Institute National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA), the International of Soil Science (IUSS), ISRIC - World Soil Information, and other leading research and soil science agencies and organizations, the conference focused on recent progress in developing new digital data resources on soils to meet the pressing needs of farmers, agronomists, resource managers, and other users for improved soil information. CIESIN senior staff associate Sonya Ahamed attended the conference as a representative of the Africa Soil Information Service (AfSIS), a collaboration between the Columbia Global Center|East Africa, the Earth Institute, and African scientists and institutions, supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. She also represented the Earth Institute at a meeting of the Global Soil Consortium held the following day on the INRA campus in Orleans. Read More

Henk Snoeken, Henk Scholten, Frank Holsmuller and Willemijn Simon van Leeuwen welcomed guests to the event.

There are 15 keynote speeches and 75 presentations, attracting around 200 delegates from more than 20 countries.

Inspiring keynote speakers, excellent presentations and stimulating social events were just a few highlights that contributed to the success of GI_Forum 2012: With over 1000 participants from 41 countries, the conference organizers of GI_Forum and AGIT received an overwhelming positive response from its growing, vibrant GI community. The 6th Geoinformatics Forum (July 3-6, 2012), co-located with the highly regarded annual German language conference on Applied Geoinformatics (AGIT), was once again organized by the Centre of Geoinformatics (Z_GIS) at the University of Salzburg, Institute of GIScience at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and the German University of Technology in Oman. It offered full-fledged, intertwined tracks on GIScience & Technology and Learning with focus on geovisualization, society and learning, and their inter-relationship.
